Majorca – the pearl of the Balearic Islands
Majorca in the Spanish Balearic Islands is a well-known holiday destination, particularly with British holidaymakers, and enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine a year. However, there is much more to Majorca than only beautiful beaches and clear blue sea. Majorca offers the visitor a wonderful choice of places to stay along with a whole host of things to see and do. Tourists can enjoy the hustle and bustle of the busy capital city of Palma de Mallorca, as well as explore the traditional towns with their local markets, or visit a pretty seaside town with a working fishing harbour. Equally, it might be that relaxing at one of the luxury resorts and glamorous beach clubs is more your thing. Interestingly, Majorca is also known for its pearls. You can pay a visit to a factory to see how they make their imitation pearls, which are actually made of glass.
Visit the capital
Palma de Mallorca is a beautiful and cosmopolitan city which offers the visitor a mix of shopping, history and culture. Perhaps you could start at La Seu cathedral. Originally gothic in design, with a more recent interior designed by the famous Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi, the golden coloured cathedral is considered by some to be the most eye-catching building in Palma. Behind the cathedral is the old town. Originally home to Arab and Jewish residents, you can take a leisurely stroll through the narrow streets to see the traditional buildings and the what remains of the ancient Arab baths. If you like to shop, Palma is quite a compact city which makes it easy to get around. Avinguda Jaume III is where you will find the luxury shops, as well as the more straightforward Spanish high-street stores. When you need to take a break from all that shopping, and you can stop for a refreshment or two at one of the many bars and cafes you will find en route. If you want to stay close to the city throughout your holiday, you will find a large choice of hotels in and around Palma.
Enjoy all that nature has to offer
If you can tear yourself away from the hotels and beaches, Majorca has a stunning natural beauty that is just asking to be explored. You can pay a visit to the Caves of Drach, for example. In these stunning underground caves you will find rock formations of stalagmites and stalactites and at the end of the tour, at the lowest point of the caves, is an underground lake where you can enjoy a music concert. With fewer visitors, but no less impressive, are the caves at Cuevas de Arta in Capdepera. If being underground is not for you, Mallorca has many hiking and cycling trails and you are sure to find one suitable whatever your age and level of ability. An easy trail from Port de Pollença leads through the Boquer Valley to the beach, and it has great views for you to enjoy along the way. You can walk the trail on your own, or get a guide from the marina, but watch out for the mountain goats who might steal your lunch.
Fantastic beaches
Majorca has an amazing number of beaches – 262, to be exact. Many of these beaches proudly display the Blue Flag, which is the sign of a high-quality, clean beach. The beaches are a diverse mix, with long sandy stretches, pebble coves and hidden bays. The variety on offer means there is a beach perfect just for you, whether you just like to sunbathe, want to snorkel in calm waters, or are looking for waves for surfing and windsurfing. The most well-known beach in Mallorca is Es Trenc. With white sand and shallow water, this beach can get busy despite it being three kilometres long. If you would prefer somewhere quieter, try Cala Varques. Near to Calas de Mallorca, this beach is a 15-minute walk from where you can park, but you will be rewarded with a relaxing spot and beautiful blue water. A favourite with locals, and with sun loungers and shades to rent, showers, and places to eat, you could also give Cala Portals Nous near Puerto Portals harbour a try. Of course, many hotels are located close to a beach so you may not have far to go from the hotel you have chosen.
