DURBAN: FUN IN THE SUN AND NATURAL BEAUTY

Durban is the largest city in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). It’s known for its subtropical climate, superb coastline, boundless beaches and of course, the ‘Golden Mile’ – a popular stretch of beachfront in the city. But visitors are provided with a unique set of experiences that go far beyond the beach. Experience Durban’s urban lifestyle, diverse culture and scenic variety. The city is blessed with natural beauty and offers visitors so many leisure and adventure activities.

There is an abundance of spectacular scenery just beyond the city. To the north lies the bustling coastal town of Umhlanga – filled with restaurants, hotels and beautiful beaches. To the south is the Sapphire Coast – an endless stretch of subtropical paradise and holiday towns. In the west you’ll find the Valley of a 1000 Hills, with its cultural villages and nature reserves. If you’re prepared to travel a little further, the mighty Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park (a World Heritage Site) and the Big 5 game reserves are just a few hours’ drive away from the city.

WHAT TO DO

This popular stretch of golden sand is separated by various piers – providing excellent opportunities for sun bathers and swimmers to enjoy the subtropical sun and warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Durban is famous for its water lifestyle and offers you activities like kayaking in the Umgeni River, jet skiing in the Blue Lagoon, yachting from the harbour, and many more. If you enjoy surfing, this city was made for you. Durban has some of the best waves on the planet!

Do you want to snorkel in a lagoon with approximately 1,500 fish? Or how about some shark cage diving? Then a visit to the uShaka Marine World is a must. This is the fifth largest aquarium in the world – 32 tanks filled with 17,500 cubic meters of water! It is designed around five shipwrecks, accommodating a variety of restaurants. A wall-sized shark aquarium is visible from most of the dining areas. You can enjoy seeing a huge array of fish and shark species, jumping dolphins shows, shark and manta ray feeding, and so much more. There is even a ‘Dangerous Creatures’ exhibit, which includes various reptiles, amphibians and arachnids.

Named after Moses Mabhida, a former General Secretary of the South African Communist Party, the stadium was built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The most popular activity at the stadium is a ride in the SkyCar – a single cabin that runs up steel tracks on the northern arch of the stadium and is designed to roll down the arch under its own gravity.
