About Times Square

Times Square is the “Crossroads of the World” in the Heart of Manhattan

Mesmerising Times Square is among the most recognisable and busiest places on earth, and the spot where New York City ushers in the new year. Found at the intersection of Broadway and 7th Avenue between West 42nd and West 47th Streets in Midtown Manhattan, this major New York landmark is an unrivalled location for people-watching. Sometimes dubbed the “Crossroads of the World”, it attracts about 50 million visitors annually.

Characterised by huge digital billboards, flashing neon signs, studios for America’s favourite TV shows and colourful street performers, Times Square sits in the vibrant Theater District. With dozens of Broadway theatres staging nightly dramas, musicals and cabarets nearby, Times Square is arguably the entertainment core at the heart of the Big Apple. Also around Times Square are masses of nightclubs, restaurants, shopping areas and hotels.

Times Square Drops the Ball in Style Every New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve typically sees an astonishing crowd of about one million people descend on Times Square to mark the new year. A New York tradition since December 31, 1907, the New Year’s Eve ball drop sees an illuminated ball descend for 60 seconds down a flagpole on the One Times Square building, which was once the headquarters of the New York Times newspaper. If you can find a spare inch of standing room in Times Square just before midnight on New Year’s Eve, you might be lucky enough to witness the spectacle. Even if you don’t get close enough to see the ball drop, Times Square is still a fun place to be on December 31 because the festivities are usually preceded by hours of live music and entertainment.

There’s so Much to See and Do Around Times Square

Whether you want tickets for big Broadway shows, a classic American dining experience, or to go on a shopping spree, Times Square is a great place to visit in New York. There’s a dizzying array of restaurants to try around Times Square, including a Hard Rock Cafe and countless neighbourhood eateries. After dark, it’s worth heading up to a rooftop bar in one of the Times Square hotels for a drink and a fine view of the iconic billboards, which display artsy murals just before midnight. Elsewhere, shopaholics can go wild at the famous Macy’s department store, which is less than 15 minutes’ walk south from Times Square. Madame Tussauds New York, which is situated on West 42nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues, is where visitors can rub shoulders with likenesses of Marvel comic characters. Back on Times Square you might even bump into the so-called Naked Cowboy, who serenades tourists with his country music tunes while wearing little more than a smile, barely-there briefs and a strategically positioned guitar.

Times Square has Numerous Hotels on its Patch

If you like the feeling of being at the centre of all the action, then Times Square might be the right part of New York for you to stay in. Indeed, there are numerous hotels suitable for all tastes and budgets in the vicinity of the landmark. The location of Times Square in the heart of Manhattan also means it is very well served by public transport options, including buses and subway lines that span the whole city.
