About Times Square

The Times Square , which is also known as "Crossroads of the World", is arguably one of the most famous landmarks of New York. The square is located in Midtown Manhattan at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue.

Formerly known as Longacre Square it was renamed in 1904 when the New York Times newspaper moved into the building at One Times Square. Just three weeks later the first electrical advertisement was put up on the square. Today it is famous for it's many digital, animated billboards, advertisement and news tickers.

The Times Square is also famous for the annually held New Year's Eve Ball Drop that is broadcasted around the world and attracts up to 1 million spectators each year. Since 1907 a ball that symbolizes the New Year is dropped from One Times Square, the latest ball which was installed in 2008 is to become a permanent year round feature.

As the square also forms the centre of Broadway it is also seen as the centre of show business and many theatres are located in the area.
