KNYSNA: THE JEWEL OF THE GARDEN ROUTE
Knysna – situated between lush forests and the shores of a peaceful lagoon – is a town in the Western Cape province of South Africa and is part of the beautiful Garden Route. This town is an extremely popular holiday destination, known for its natural beauty, annual Oyster Festival, and the Knysna Heads – one of the most striking geological features along the entire southern African coastline. The Heads are two great sandstone cliffs that flank a deep and potentially treacherous channel through which the sea floods the wide and breathtaking lagoon at the mouth of the Knysna River. The Knysna Lagoon is one of the few places on earth that supports an oyster hatchery, and its oysters are reputedly among the tastiest in the world. The popular Oyster Festival usually takes place during the July holiday, so be sure to make all your reservations in advance. But Knysna is an absolutely beautiful destination all year round, and offers great deals and specials on lodges and other accommodation during its off seasons.
Knysna offers you a wide variety of attractions and exquisite hotel options. One of the most spectacular sights is the Knysna Forest, which is still evident in many places within the town. It is the largest indigenous forest in South Africa, consisting of very tall and ancient trees like ironwood, stinkwood, yellowwood, blackwood, white alders and Cape chestnut. The forest is vast and immensely dense in places, making it almost impenetrable. It’s home to a few small antelope and a large variety of birds – among them is the famous Knysna Loerie. It was once the sanctuary for great herds of Knysna Elephants, but today it’s believed that only one lonely cow remains.
WHAT TO SEE AND DO
The Knysna area is known for its wildlife and natural beauty, which makes it a very popular destination for hikers. Some of the best hiking trails can be found within close proximity to the town. On a beautiful day, there is no better place to visit than the Jubilee picnic spot and hiking trail – nestled among dense indigenous forest. The kids will love splashing in the shallow waters, while the adults relax and enjoy a braai (barbecue) in the shade.
Another amazing natural destination is Circles in the Forest. This is an easy, circular hiking trail (from 3 kilometres to 9 kilometres) that celebrates Knysna’s woodcutting heritage.
Most of the natural attractions along the Garden Route are situated in nature reserves – some of which have been named world heritage sites. The Featherbed Nature Reserve is a South African Heritage Site and a pristine piece of paradise. It’s situated on the Western Head of Knysna and is only accessible by ferry. It’s known to be the premier eco-experience on the Garden Route. This is a wonderful, full-day excursion for all ages and fitness levels.
The Storms River Mouth in the Tsitsikamma National Park is also a very popular spot for visitors. Are you up for a bit of adventure? Then take a walk across the suspension bridge over the river, or do a bungy jump from the Bloukrans River Bridge – the worlds highest commercial bungy bridge!
If you don’t fancy walking through the forest, then talk a walk on the beach from Brenton-on-Sea to Buffalo Bay. This 5.5 kilometre (one way) walk is so peaceful, you’ll completely lose track of time as you splash in the surf.
The area around Knysna also boasts some of the most pristine beaches in South Africa. Buffalo Bay is one of the most-loved on the Garden Route and is situated in the Goukamma Nature Reserve. It’s ideal for swimming and offers wonderful, natural entertainment for you and the family. Noetzie Beach is a favourite among adventure seekers. This relatively isolated beach is in the Sinclair Nature Area – only 10 minutes away from your hotel or guesthouse in Knysna. Brenton-on-Sea is is about 20 kilometres from Knysna, and an expansive shoreline that is bordered by lush indigenous forest and the powerful Indian Ocean. It’s the ideal place for a romantic walk, long and lazy days of sunbathing, or fishing. The kids will love exploring the rock pools here, so don’t forget their fishing nets!
Do you enjoy a round of golf? Then head to the Simola Country Club & Spa. But be warned: keeping your eye on the ball can be a challenge, because the views around the course are out of this world. Simola is one of South Africa's premier golfing destinations and the first Jack Nicklaus Signature course on the Garden Route. Every hole boasts exceptional views and this 5 star hotel is the perfect place to spoil yourself in the lap of luxury.
WHERE TO STAY
Knysna offers you the perfect blend of accommodation options. From a luxury 5 star hotel experience, to a convenient bed and breakfast, or even something cheap and cheerful. This town has it all. Even if you don’t feel like staying in the town itself, you’ll be able to find a beautiful guesthouse or lodge just outside Knysna. Whatever your needs and budget, you will love this jewel of the Garden Route and find the perfect spot to call your home for a while.
